My Story

I started in China’s steel industry in 1998.

Back then, information traveled slowly. Prices were negotiated over phone calls and faxes. A deal could take days to close — not because of complexity, but because nobody had the full picture.

By 2004, I had seen enough to start my own trading company. I knew the market, I knew the players, and I thought I knew how to manage risk.

Then came 2008.

The financial crisis hit hard. Prices collapsed. Orders vanished overnight. I learned a painful lesson: in steel, timing is everything — and timing depends entirely on having the right information at the right moment.

I rebuilt. I adapted. I kept going.

Then 2012 happened.

Another crisis. Another lesson. This time, I understood something deeper: it’s not just about having data. It’s about having the time to turn that data into a decision.

When you’re in the middle of a price swing, a policy change, or a supply disruption, every hour spent digging through spreadsheets and news feeds is an hour you’re not negotiating, securing inventory, or protecting your margins.

That gap — between information and action — is where deals are won or lost.

Why I Started SteelInsights

In 2026, after 22 years in the industry, I founded Amy SteelInsights.

Not because the world needed another market report. But because procurement managers today face something I’ve never seen before: a perfect storm of uncertainty.
